VPA deploys mist cannons to combat severe heat wave in Visakhapatnam Visakhapatnam: With Visakhapatnam reeling under an intense heat wave, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority has rolled out water fogging/mist cannon vehicles along RK Beach Road and busy locations as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

The mobile mist cannons will operate daily from 11AM to 3 PM, targeting the high-footfall stretch between RK Beach and Appughar as well as other busy public locations. By spraying ultra-fine water mist into the air, the cannons help lower ambient temperatures by several degrees, reduce dust, and improve comfort levels for pedestrians, tourists, and commuters during peak afternoon hours.
VPA officials said the initiative was launched in response to soaring daytime temperatures that have made outdoor movement difficult, especially along the exposed beachfront promenade. The port authority is coordinating with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to identify additional public zones where misting can provide relief.
Tourists and visitors on Beach Road welcomed the measure. Several of them noted that the cool mist made the stretch more bearable and allowed families to spend time outdoors despite the heat. Local vendors said the move is also helping maintain footfall during what is usually a lean period due to extreme weather.
The deployment is temporary and will continue until the heat wave conditions subside. Officials added that the water used is non-potable and the system is designed to minimise wastage while maximizing cooling impact. VPA is monitoring temperature data and public feedback to adjust timings and routes if needed.
This is one of several heat-mitigation steps being discussed by civic agencies, as the city faces prolonged spells of high temperature and humidity. The mist cannon initiative adds to VPA's recent CSR efforts focused on public welfare, sanitation, and environmental improvement in and around the port area.
For now, the cool blanket of mist along RK Beach offers a small but welcome break from the summer scorch, drawing appreciation from residents and tourists alike.
