Telangana stands 4th in farmers' suicide Hyderabad, Nov 25 (INN): As many as 462 farmers have committed suicide in Telangana State due to agrarian crisis. These suicides were reported from 2013 to to 5th March this year.
This was disclosed by Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh in his reply to a question raised by Samajwadi Party MP Neeraj Shekar in Rajya Sabha on Friday.
In his reply, the Union Minister submitted state-wise statistics of suicide by farmers due to agrarian reasons in the year 2015 and 2016. As per the list, Maharashtra is on top with 1898 (1841 - 2015 & 57 - 2016) suicides followed by Karnataka with 1,003 (922 & 81) and Punjab with 505 (449 & 56) suicides. While mentioning 462 farmers' suicides in Telangana State, the annexure says that the figure pertains to suicides reported from 2013 to 5th March, 2016, although in the column for 2016 it mentioned "NR" (Not Reported).
Similarly, as many as 129 farmers committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh due to agrarian reasons. Of them, 94 suicides were reported in 2015 and 35 occurred in 2016.
