Medical student from AP set alight in Kolar KOLAR/HYDERABAD: Unidentified miscreants set afire a 20-year-old MBBS student from Hyderabad at Tamaka on the outskirts of Kolar in Karnataka on Tuesday night after he resisted their attempt to snatch his chain. He was admitted to St John's Hospital in Bengaluru in a critical condition.
Kolar Superintendent of Police Ram Niwas Sepat said the victim, Kamalesh, a 9th semester student of the Devaraj Urs Medical College, is a native of Hyderabad and was staying in Tamaka in a rented house.
According to a complaint filed by his friend, around 10.30 p.m, two robbers waylaid and attacked Kamalesh when he was on his way home. When Kamalesh resisted, the duo poured inflammable oil on him and set him on fire.
One of his room-mates noticed Kamalesh lying on the ground with serious burns and alerted the police who rushed to the spot and shifted him to the Devaraj Urs Medical College Hospital. He was later admitted to St John's Hospital in Bengaluru.
When contacted, principal of the Devaraj Urs Medical College Dr Sanikop said Kamlesh was a good student and waiting to take the final examination in another two months. Kamalesh sustained at least 50 per cent burns. His father is an advocate by profession.
Back in Hyderabad, pro-Telangana groups alleged that Kamalesh had a heated argument with fellow students belonging to Rayalaseema and raised Jai Telangana slogans.
They claimed that the Rayalaseema students had tried to kill him. However, the Kolar SP denied the allegations but said, 'We will look into the allegations whether a tiff between two groups led to this attack.'
