APSRTC to seek design changes in Volvo bus Hyderabad: The APSRTC has decided to write to Volvo Company to make changes in their designs in the aftermath of the recent bus accident at Mahabubnagar that left 45 persons dead.
The engineers' team of the APSRTC examined the buses manufactured by Volvo. The corporation has 88 Volvo buses in its total fleet of 22,500 buses. After examining the buses, engineers have suggested some changes in the design and also wanted precautions to be taken so that lives can be saved during the accidents.
Talking to media, APSRTC MD A K Khan said that the corporation would be writing to the Volvo for taking up few changes in the design. The engineering team of the corporation found out fault with the automatic doors.
The team wanted Volvo to keep the main door manual instead of automatic so that in case of fire accidents, the passengers can escape from the bus during the fire accidents.
The team also wanted the Company to see that in event of fire in the bus, all the emergency doors should open automatically. The recent Mahabubnagar bus which caught fire gave no scope for passengers to escape. It was learnt that the main door of the ill-fated bus was locked automatically after the fire accident.
On Wednesday night a Volvo (Garuda) bus owned by the APSRTC also caught fire near Nalgonda. The driver, who saw smoke emanating from the luggage compartment, stopped the bus and asked the passengers to leave the bus immediately.
