Naidu demands Bharat Ratna for NTR Hyderabad: A day after the Centre announced Bharat Ratna for cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and eminent scientist CNR Rao, the demand for conferring India's highest civilian award on Telugu film thespian and founder president of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, came to the fore again.
TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday demanded that the Union government announce Bharat Ratna for NTR, recognising his yeomen service to the nation as a political leader and for his contribution to the film industry.
He said NTR in his 33-year film career and 13-year political life brought many laurels to the State by not only spreading the pride of Telugu people across the world but also empowering the underprivileged by introducing several schemes, including abolition of Patwari rule in Telangana and equal property rights to women.
Naidu said his father-in-law was also instrumental in launching the highly subsidised rice distribution scheme at Rs 2-a-kg to eradicate hunger deaths in the State.
