ATM attack: Mugger fled to Hindupur
BANGALORE: The man who mugged bank manager Jyothi Uday on Tuesday escaped to Andhra Pradesh soon after the crime, Bangalore police have discovered. He went to Hindupur taluk, about 100 km from Bangalore, and sold the mobile he had stolen from her for Rs. 500.
The assailant went to a shop and pressed its owner Abuzar to buy Jyothi's Nokia 2700 for Rs. 1,000. When Abuzar declined, he said he was in great difficulty and was willing to sell it cheap. He then offered the phone for Rs. 500. The transaction took place around 8.15 pm, police said.
Minutes later, Abuzar inserted a SIM card and switched on the phone. The Bangalore police, tracking it with the help of its IMEI number, came to know its location.
A police team travelled to Andhra Pradesh and interrogated Abuzar. He reportedly told the police the seller spoke Telugu and had never visited the shop before.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar on Thursday told banks to provide multiple levels of security at ATMs. Auradkar instructed banks to put in place security measures before Sunday.
The banks will have to deploy guards round the clock and install CCTV cameras inside and outside every ATM kiosk. The police are also recommending the installation of a button to alert the bank in case of a mugging attempt.
'I have had three meetings with all bank authorities, but they are not keen to secure their ATM premises... If we find lack of security, we will take legal action and even ask the banks to close down such ATMs,' Auradkar said.
He has announced a reward of Rs. 1 lakh for information about the accused.
Where is Mom?
Jyothi Uday's adopted daughter has just turned four and is asking why she can't see her mother. The child misses her mother, and the many gifts she had promised. Jyothi had visited the ATM kiosk on Tuesday to withdraw money to buy stuff for her daughter's birthday.
