Naidu asks President to scrap Krishna Tribunal Award HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday urged President Pranab Mukherjee to set aside the verdict of Brijesh Kumar Tribunal on Krishna water dispute and set up a new tribunal to solve the issue.
A delegation of TDP leaders led by Chandrababu Naidu met the President on Monday in Delhi and submitted an eight- page report on the final verdict of Brijesh Kumar Tribunal.
He explained to the President the gross injustice meted out to Andhra Pradesh with the verdict. Naidu also met Union minister for water resources Harish Rawat later in the evening and submitted a memorandum to him.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the President, Chandrababu said that he had requested him to scrap the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal's verdict and set up a new tribunal to solve the issue. ''We are confident that the President will do justice to the state,' he said.
The Tribunal decision to allocate water on 65 per cent dependability and additional water to both Maharashtra and Karnataka would significantly impact Andhra Pradesh as it is a lower riparian state, Naidu said.
Blaming the state government for the verdict going against the state, the TDP chief alleged that the state failed to make out its issues forcefully with the Tribunal leading to such an adverse decision.
He said the judgment will allow Karnataka to increase the height of the Almatti dam built across the river in Bijapur district to 524 metres from 519 metres which would be against the interests of Andhra Pradesh.
'All this happened due to former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy's letter to the tribunal stating that the state do not want rights over surplus waters of Krishna river,' he alleged.
'The ruling will jeopardized the future of many irrigation projects in both Seemandhra and Telangana regions. An investment of nearly Rs 35,000 crore made on them might go waste if Karnataka and Maharashtra impound more than their legitimate shares of Krishna river water,' he lamented.
He alleged that the Congress leaders were unmoved even when grave injustice was being done to farming community in the state with the fresh award on Krishna waters.
