Girl attacked and raped in the presence of lover Sullurpet (Nellore): Even as the nation was readying to observe the first anniversary of the ghastly December 16 gang-rape case in Delhi, a similar incident took place in Andhra Pradesh on the eve of the anniversary in Sullurpet town in Nellore district on Sunday.
Both cases have a chilling resemblance ' the girl was attacked and raped in the presence of her lover. Only difference is that it is not a gang-rape in the Sullurpet incident and the assailant accosted them, claiming to be a cop.
A girl from Jangalapalli in Sullurpet mandal and a boy from Guntakindapalli in Srikalahasti mandal in Chittoor district have fallen in love. On Saturday, they visited Sri Chengalamma Parameswari Temple in Sullurpet, and after darshan went to the nearby Kalangi River .
A youth Rajasekhar hailing from Doravarisatram mandal, claimed to be a cop, and threatened them. He took away their money and valuables and tried to outrage the modesty of the girl.
The girl's lover tried to resist him, but Rajasekhar overpowered him and thrashed them both with a stick. He then committed the heinous act on the woman as the injured lover watched helplessly.
As the culprit tried to flee after the crime, the lovers managed to raise an alarm and with the help of passers-by caught him. On receipt of information, police rushed to the spot and took the rapist into custody.
They shifted the woman to the government hospital here and booked cases against Rajasekhar under the Nirbhaya Act and the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
