Affidavit war to drag T into legal tangle HYDERABAD: In their frantic attempt to stall State division, Congress lawmakers from Seemandhra are giving finishing touches to a 2-page affidavit to be submitted to the President, Assembly Speaker, Chairman of the Legislative Council and the Supreme Court.
As reported in these columns on Tuesday, the Seemandhra Congress MLAs and MLCs have drafted the affidavits, listing their objections to State division. Seemandhra lawmakers from other parties too may follow suit once the debate on the T bill gains momentum. However, it remains to be seen whether all the Seemandhra legislators from Congress will file the affidavits.
During his meeting with Seemandhra Ministers and legislators at his camp-office here Tuesday, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy advised them to submit copies of the affidavits to the President, Speaker, Council Chairman and the Supreme Court, pleading with them not to divide the State.
According to sources, Kiran told them this would come in handy in the future to challenge the Centre on the ground that it has ignored the majority opinion in the Assembly. Emerging from the meeting, MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy confirmed the Express report and revealed the Chief Minister's advice.
Interestingly, Telangana leaders also began consulting lawyers to prepare affidavits of their own. While thanking the Centre for its T decision, they are expected to putforth their views on contentious issues such as the status of Hyderabad.
