Lobbying begins for Vijayawada as Capital VIJAYAWADA: With bifurcation of the state becoming imminent, intense lobbying has begun for making Vijayawada the capital of the successor state of Andhra Pradesh. Representatives of various organisations have unanimously opined that the city qualifies well for the status of capital of the new state.
Addressing a meeting organised by the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) in the city Thursday, veteran journalist C Raghavachari said that Vijayawada has all qualifications to become the capital of the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh.
He said the city had facilities like airport, a big bus terminal, a railway junction and infrastructural facilities besides being located at an ideal place.
Demanding that an expert committee decide the new capital, former mayor Jandhyala Shankar felt neither the Group of Ministers (GOM) nor other politicos should decide on the subject. It was good for the Seemandhra districts to have a fair chance to construct their new capital with good planning and design, he said.
President of ACCI, Muthavarpu Murali Krishna said the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) had conducted a study in 13 Seemandhra districts and prepared a report on construction of the new capital.
General secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners' Association, Y Eswara Rao, said that Vijayawada city was suitable to be selected as the capital.
TDP leader Gottipati Ramakrishna Prasad said the leaders of Krishna district had failed to lobby for the new capital even though the division of state became inevitable. Leaders, entrepreneurs, veteran journalists and others participated.
