Etala assures to Gulf migrant workers Hyderabad, March 10 (INN): Finance Minister Etala Rajender on Tuesday assured the Legislative Council that Telangana Government would take all steps to resolve the problems being faced by workers who migrated to Gulf countries.
Replying to a question raised by TDP MLC Arikela Narsa Reddy during Question Hour, the Minister admitted that number of Telangana people have been languishing in prisons due to lack of passports and for various other reasons in Gulf countries. He said a total of 24 imprisoned cases of illegal migrants have come to the notice of the government. Of them, three jailed immigrants were released and repatriated to their native districts. In respect of 21 cases, the Government of Telangana has addressed the respective Embassies/Consulates to get them released.
Speaking on the issue, Narsa Reddy alleged that the government was not having effective mechanism to prevent the cheating of workers by the fake travel agents and brokers. He said a majority of workers, who are facing problems in Gulf countries, hail from North Telangana.
Deputy CLP leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir alleged that the government has completely neglected the welfare of Gulf migrants. He said that no representative from the Telangana Government attended the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas held in Gujarat this year. This shows the lack of seriousness with regard to NRIs and other workers. He recalled that as the NRI Minister from 2004-2009, he took several measures to address the problems of migrant workers. He said that the then government even arranged free flight tickets to bring back the jailed workers.
Responding to this, Etala assured that all steps would be taken to resolve the problems and a Kerela-like model would be adopted in Telangana to address the issues related to Gulf migrants.
