TS to construct 1516 new Farm Godowns Hyderabad, March 18 (INN): Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Wednesday informed the Legislative Assembly that the State Government proposed to construct 1,516 godowns, with an aggregate capacity of 15.8275 lakh Metric Tonnes, across Telangana State.
Replying to a question raised by Hanmanth Shinde during Question Hour, Harish Rao the new godowns would provide storage facility to farmers for their agriculture produce in the State. Of 1,516 godowns, as many as 1348 godowns of 9.1025 Lakh MT capacity, will be constructed by the Cooperation Department at a cost of Rs 620.48 Crore. Remaining 168 godowns of 6.725 Lakh MTs capacity will be taken up by the Agricultural Marketing Department at a cost of Rs 403.50 Crore.
The minister said that no scientific approach was adopted for the construction of godowns in the past. He said the State needed godowns to provide storage for farm produce up to 21 lakh MTs. He said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was quite particular that all godowns should be constructed with a complete scientific approach. He also informed that the government was also planning to start new market yards while upgrading the existing ones. A study is underway to list out other needs of the farmers, he said.
