NGOs to work with MANUU

Hyderabad, March 27 (INN): Leading Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have agreed to develop long term community based collaboration with the Department of Social Work of Maulana Azad National Urdu University.

According to Prof. Mohd. Shahid, Head, Department of Social Work, about 20 representatives of several NGOs participated at the meeting which was held recently at MANUU.

Rubina Mazhar, CEO, Safa India Society, said that by entering into an agreement with MANUU her organization would be able to impart intensive community services.

The representatives at the meeting were also from various state government departments. 'The objective of the meeting was to review the contribution of the students who do their internship with the NGOs; re-orient them for better results and also explore the possibility of their placements. We wish to make the fieldwork of the students better planned and outcome oriented,' Prof. Shahid said.

Dr. Aftab Alam, the fieldwork coordinator, highlighted the need to improve the quality of field engagement of MSW students and make long term community based collaborations with the agencies.

Term wise plan, working process and report writing techniques were explained in detail along with restructuring of fieldwork days and semester wise placement of students.

The agency representatives appreciated the commitment and industriousness of MSW students. They also acknowledged that the initiative of Social Work Department to interact with field agencies is unique and should continue in the future.

Prof. Shahid said, 'It would not have been possible for the academia to nurture and hone the skills of social work students but for the generous support from the field work agencies. This NGO Meet therefore is an opportunity to share and reflect objectively and decide mutually agreeable broad framework for making the concurrent field work more intensive and effective. He told the NGOs that modalities of long term relationship would be worked out by the faculty in consultation with the NGOs.

Mazhar, Dr. Sandhya Padma of MNJ Cancer Hospital, A.M. Raja Reddy of Don Bosco Navajeevan, Prashant of Family Planning Association of India, Rafia Nausheen of Mahita, Srinivas Reddy of Hyderabad Leprosy Control and Health Society, Shams of Hyderabad Council for Human Welfare, Deepak of Bharuka Charitable Trust were among those who participated in the meeting.

Shyna Saif, faculty member, Department of Social Work, recapitulated the major outcome of the interaction and suggested that mutual reciprocity can help in achieving the goal of developing trained social workers in the future. Md. Israr Alam, faculty and Student's Advisor, proposed the vote of thanks.

In addition to the meet, the Students of Social Work also organised an exhibition at the Sayyed Hamid Liabrary of MANUU in association with their respective fieldwork agencies where they displayed products, IEC Materials, etc. Almost 200 students and staff members from different departments of the university visited the exhibition. A patient who has been successfully treated of the cancer at MNJ Cancer Hospital also participated in the exhibition to raise awareness about cancer and ways of combating the disease.
