Chandra Babu inaugurates Kadapa airport Kadapa, June 7 (INN): With the landing of first flight of Air Pegasus from Bengaluru at 11.30 AM on Sunday, the Kadapa Airport joined the aviation map of India.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu formally inaugurated the airport in the presence of Union Ministers P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, M Venkaiah Naidu and Sujana Chowdhary, State Ministers, MPs, MLAs, MLCs and senior officials.
The Airports Authority of India has constructed the Kadapa Airport at a cost of Rs. 42 Crores. It has a new compact pre-fabricated terminal building with a capacity to handle 100 peak hour passengers at a time. The runway with dimension 1719 m x 45 m is capable to handle ATR-72 type of aircraft operations. The new Apron can accommodate 3 Nos. of ATR-72 type of aircrafts. Depending upon the growth of passenger traffic at Kadapa Airport, expansion and upgradation of the Airport will be done to handle A 320 type of aircraft operations. To facilitate the development of Kadapa Airport, the State Government has made available 520 Acres of land.
The airport, fifth in Andhra Pradesh, is expected to enhance the business potential and employment opportunities for the local youth and also contribute in the economic growth of the city and the region.
Air Pegasus became the first airlines to launch its services to and from Kadapa. Its flight from Bengaluru landed at the Kadapa airport at 11.30 a.m. Later, the flight took off back for Bengaluru. It would be operating Kadapa-Bengaluru service thrice a week.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu said that the airport would be upgraded to handle operations of bigger aircraft. He said that the Central Government would consider naming the airport after saint and poet Annamayya.
