Gaganam - a movie with a difference, says Nag

Vijayawada: Actors Nagarjuna, Poonam Kaur and producer 'Dil' Raju of 'Gaganam', a film said to have been made on the basis of events surrounding the hijack of Indian Airlines plane to Kandahar in Afghanistan in 1999, are confident that the film will be a commercial success though it has been made in a totally non-commercial format.

The trio regaled a large number of fans and others in Annapoorna theatre by attending the premiere show. They were on a tour to promote the film, which is all set to hit the screens on Friday, in which Nagarjuna plays the role of a commando who storms the plane and frees the passengers from the hijackers. Poonam Kaur plays the role of an airhostess, who is held hostage by the hijackers along with the passengers.

'This film is an answer to all those who have been saying that Telugu movies have become formulaic and routine. 'Gaganam' has no songs and no fights, and it does not have a heroine in the conventional sense. But the story has a lot of strength and the film will surely be a hit,' Mr. Nagarjuna said, talking to reporters at Swarna palace before coming to the theatre for the premiere show.

'Wrong notions'

While asserting that premier shows were being organised to dispel certain wrong notions about the movie, Mr. Nagarjuna also said, in reply to a question, that the film had a message that terrorists needed to be dealt with firmly and 'not by treating them to biryanis as was done in the case of Pakistani gunman Kasab.' 'The film shows that such terrorists could be killed there and then in an intelligent manner,' he said.

The actor disclosed, in reply to another question, that his son Naga Chaitanya was currently acting in a movie called 'Autonagar Surya' and would be playing a role in 'Bezwada Rowdylu' set to be made by Ram Gopal Varma on the gang wars that the city was once known for. Mr. Raju said it was wrong to say that the film was a kind of documentary and Nagarjuna had only a guest role in it. 'The first half of the film is like sambar and the second half is like curd rice,' he remarked in the theatre. A large number of fans of Mr. Nagarjuna turned up at the theatre to greet him, and the actor did not disappoint them as he got on to a vehicle and waved to them. He was showered flower petals.
