Actress Sujatha passes away Chennai, April 6 (INN): Popular South Indian actress Sujatha breathed her last at her residence in Chennai after prolonged illness. The 58-year-old actress, born in Sri Lanka in 1952, acted with top actors in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi films.
The actress was introduced to tinsel town by director K Balachander in Aval Oru Thodarkadai.
Sujatha has acted with almost the who-is-who of South Indian cinema, among them Akkineni Nageswara Rao, NT Rama Rao, Sobhan Babu, Sivaji Ganesan and Rajnikanth. She shared screen presence with renowned actor Kamal Haasan in most of her films.
Known for her dulcet voice, Sujatha was recognized by her elegant yet powerful acting. Avarkal, Annaikili, Vidhi Andhaman Kadali, Edanthasthula meda, Anubhandham, Circus Ramudu, Gorintaku, Sandya, Guppedu Manasu and Sri Ramadasu are among her more notable films. Her portrayal of a mother in the film Pelli won her the Nandi award.
Ajith starrer Varalaru was her last film. It was released in 2004. In her three decades celluloid journey Sujatha acted in nearly 300 films and received various awards, including prestigious Kalai Mamani Award from the Tamil Nadu Government.
