Sonia Aggarwal returns

Chennai: Sonia Agarwal seems on a roll these days with three Tamil films and another in Malayalam. After a hiatus of nearly five years, Sonia Agarwal, is back in action with three Tamil films and one Malayalam, three out of the four films with heroine-centric storylines.

It began with 'Vaanam', earlier this year where her character, Zara, though a small part of the film, gave her the much-anticipated attention she desired. And recently, she began to shoot for 'Oru Nadigaiyin Vaakkumoolam' directed by Rajkrishna with a song sequence at the AVM Studios, choreographed by Poppy master.

Talking about her re-entry in the industry, Sonia says, 'When I chose to do 'Vaanam', I had already watched the Telugu version. I knew, that it was a small part but had its share of significance, which was crucial for me. Everybody was disappointed as to why I chose to do it. But when the film released, much to my expectations, my fans picked the right scene and highlighted it on my twitter page, with comments that it was a wonderful performance.'

The scene that she is referring to is the one where Zara has a miscarriage. She states, 'I needed that one close-up very badly and am indeed grateful to director Krish who made that happen. In the Telugu version, there is no such close-up.'

While a comeback in Kollywood is certainly no joke, Sonia makes no secret of the fact that it was not an easy task. She explains, 'I had to ensure that look-wise, my character in 'Oru Nadigaiyin Vaakkumoolam' didn't differ much from that of '7G Rainbow Colony'.'

In fact, some film critics on first watch claim that the film is loosely based on the life of yesteryear actress Kanchana. This script centers around her character, her humble beginnings in a village, how she became an actress and the times thereafter.

This apart, there are two other Tamil films she is doing. Sonia shares, 'One is titled 'Matha Pitha Guru', for which I have done two song sequences already. There are different roles in the same film, that of a journalist, a female god-woman or saint and a character with negative shades.'

The subject of the film deals with child abuse. Sonia reveals, 'For the character of a journalist, I had to shed weight. I'm happy doing so because now I'm back to my original weight of '7G Rainbow Colony' days ' 52 kg,' she beams.

Another film which will go on floors soon, hopefully in August, is titled 'Poi Sollathedi'. 'This is a commercial venture and the crew is on the lookout for a new face to play the hero,' she says.

In addition to this, Sonia has also forayed into Mollywood. 'Malayalam cinema has interesting scripts and the shooting schedules are also very quick. 'Grihanathan' is about a married couple, how things go well at first and then when problems arise, you see different shades to the wife, who defends herself and her marriage,' she says.

Language of course was a challenge to get used to. Sonia points out, 'My mother tongue is Punjabi and it has a strong slang just like Tamil and Malayalam. After staying here for a few years now, I understand Tamil quite well, which was not the case with Malayalam. But I managed. The film is also almost done. There are just about 20-25days left to shoot.'
