Priya Anand: Smitten by cinema bug Hyderabad: Her genial disposition puts you at ease and her ease with languages impresses you. Actress Priya Anand lets destiny lead her wherever she goes There is more than a hint of an American accent when she speaks English. You would expect that from someone who has been raised in the US. Her Telugu however, has no traces of an American twang. She has even dubbed for her films in Telugu and Tamil.
'I love dubbing. I think it adds energy to the performance when you do the dubbing yourself. I am glad I got to work with the likes of Sekhar Kammula who insisted that I do my own dubbing. A lot of actors rely on a dubbing artiste as their voice is too husky or doesn't fit the bill. Thankfully God has gifted me with a good enough voice,' says Priya. She seems to have a way with languages.
She is proficient in Spanish and Bengali as well. 'Almost everyone in the US speaks Spanish. I had a lot of Bengali friends in college, so I picked up the language from them. I think it is the sweetest language in the world. Languages have always come easy to me,' she explains. It is definitely a good skill to have as an actor. Priya moved back to India after finishing her studies. The plan was to meet director Shankar and hopefully work under him as an assistant. So she landed in Chennai where her grandparents live, and one thing lead to another.
Priya did some modelling in Chennai and started getting acting offers. 'It was a conscious decision to move to India. I love the flavour of India and missed being here. I love Indian cinema and always dreamt of being a part of it. The plan was to get involved in filmmaking, but it is funny how things turn out and I just went with the flow,' she says.
Her life seems to revolve around cinema. 'I think it is a little lame, but everything about my life since childhood has been related to movies. I love music and like dancing too. I also like talking, meeting new people and travelling and there is no better place to do that than movies,' shares the actor, going on to add, 'I do not drink or smoke and I am not much of a party animal either. When I am not working I love watching films.'
As far as choosing films goes, Priya relies on her own instincts. 'I do take advice from other people but I usually rely on my gut feeling. I don't even have a PR person. I don't like to blame others for what goes wrong in my life,' says the sensible actor.
We could not let her go without a question or two about her love life of course. 'I am in a weird place actually you know. I am not fully Indian or American. So the qualities I look for in people are a little hard for me to find here,' signs off Priya.
