I will be a star one day: Sharwanad Hyderabad: He acted in two films last year'Prasthanam and Andari Bandhuvaya. Neither of them did great in terms of business but each have won critical acclaim as they won the coveted Nandi Award. Sharwanand is pleased as punch.
'I don't know if something like this has happened earlier. But I am thrilled about it. It's a first for me certainly,' he beams. That's not all. He was awarded the special jury award for his performance as a do-gooder in Andari Bandhuvaya. 'That was like the icing on the cake,' he smiles. 'You don't expect such things,' he adds.
Anyone who'd seen his first film, 5va Tarikhu wouldn't have bet on Sharwanand going too far. Not many saw it. 'The film was out of the theatres in five days,' he says. Talk about a bad start. With no offers coming his way, Sharwanand had to make do with small roles. 'I kept doing roles of brothers and friends in films because that was all I was getting. I took them up regardless, hoping my time would come,' he shares.
His moment came in 2008, with director Krish's Gamyam. 'It was the biggest hit of my career. The film got me recognition as an actor,' he shares. The film was remade in Tamil as Kadhalana Summa Illai and had Sharwanand playing the lead as well. The film was a huge hit there. He had, finally, arrived as a lead actor.
Sharwanand though believes it was the fringe roles that helped him get to where he is. 'One film helped me land the next. Director Deva Katta liked me in Yuva Sena and offered me a role in Vennela. I was offered Amma Cheppindi because of Vennela, which in turn landed me with Veedhi that helped me bag Gamyam. So everything has added up to get me where I am today,' he shares.
It took him eight long years to get recognition as a lead actor. We couldn't help asking if it ever occurred to him if familial clout would have made the climb much easier? 'Of course things could have been easier.
It's only natural. I come from a business family myself and if I were to get into the family business it would be a lot easier for me than for someone trying to do it all by himself,' he says. 'But I will be a star one day,' he declares adding, 'It might take me a long time but I am sure I will get there eventually.'
His career is looking much better now. He is acting in Engeyum Eppothum, a Tamil film. Maverick director Murugadoss is producing the film jointly with Fox Studios. 'It is a very exciting film. I don't think something like it has ever been tried in Indian cinema. I am sure it is going to be a cult film,' he says unable to contain his excitement.
Saravanan, a prot'g' of Murugadoss is directing the film, which is scheduled to release by the end of August. 'We did not raise a single set for the film. We did not shoot even one day in a studio. The film is set in Chennai and moves through to Trichy. All of it was shot in natural settings. The movie has come out very well, I think it is going to be a milestone in my career,' shares the actor.
He's lost quite a bit of weight off late; we learn it's for his next film. 'I have a very stylised role in my next film. I needed a new look for it, that's why I had to lose weight,' he explains. Sharwanand is playing the lead alongside Allari Naresh for the first time since Gamyam in this yet-to-be-titled film.
'We have had a lot of offers to act together since Gamyam, but none of them really caught our interest. until this film. Naresh is a great friend and I am looking forward to working with him again,' he says.
