Dubbed films make box office ringing Hyderabad: Actor Jeeva's film Rangam has easily been the most successful Telugu film this year since it is all set to cross the 100-day mark. Well, it isn't a Telugu film actually.
It's the dubbed version of a Tamil film but this isn't a one-off case though. Be it Naa Peru Siva, Vadu Veedu or Kanchana, some of the biggest hits this year have all been made in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.
The trend is not new but it also has a hidden message for the filmmakers. Tamil films have always enjoyed a great following among movie lovers in the state.
But when you juxtapose the trend with the growing popularity of Telugu dubbed versions of Hollywood films, it only suggests that perhaps there is something amiss.
'Look at the number of dubbed films running in theatres across the state currently. They easily outnumber the films that are originally made in Telugu. It just goes to show that the audience is craving for novelty in content and are opting for films that are offering novelty irrespective of the language of their origin,' opines Katti Mahesh Kumar, a film scholar.
While there are reasons aplenty as to what's ailing Telugu cinema, there seems to be no resolution in sight. Director Teja believes the need of the hour is to usher in new talent.
'We need a new crop of directors with fresh ideas, for things to change. Unless that happens, the situation will go from bad to worse. Hopefully it will happen sooner than later,' says Teja on a closing note. We surely do hope so too.
