Membership issue, a serious concern for MAA Hyderabad, Sept 18 (INN): Movie Artistes Association (MAA) has been caught napping as some of the leading heroines failed to take membership. Though it had served notices on them setting this month-end as deadline, many unpleasant questions raise on the attitude of the association.
Some of the artistes had also won Nandi awards and attended many functions in the State though they were not members of the Association. MAA has absolutely no control over the stars like Anushka, Trisha, Genelia, Kajal, Tamannah, Taapsee, Nithya Menon and Samantha, as they cannot mediate any dispute between any of these stars and producers.
The industry had in the past seen many unpleasant scenes where heroines walked off the sets, stunt masters coming to grips, and protests against imports and many such issues.
We have seen a film star undergoing fast as he was not given roles. We have seen a film star running accusing a senior artiste of slapping her and the stunt men from the state protesting imports from Chennai. MAA could intervene only when the both the disputing parties are members of the Association.
It is better MAA makes it mandatory for every production house to ensure that all artistes take membership or enroll them the moment they sign up for a film. This way, the Association can save lot of embarrassment.
The piquant situation the Association today is beyond comprehension as some of the stars had won awards and attended functions organized by the film industry. The membership fee is Rs 1 lakh. Not that stars are not members of film associations of other states. In fact they are. So where the fault lies does is very open.
If artistes from other states should enroll here, MAA should also see that at least the local technicians get a good deal. When local talent cannot be protected how fair is it to try to have a say over people coming from other states.
