Bindu Madhavi shines in Tamil films
Hyderabad: 'Since you are not doing many films why don't you get back to your studies or get married?' her relatives often ask Bindu Madhavi. She was a bright student and has a degree in Biotechnology from Vellore Institute of Technology.
'Well that was until I joined college. After that I was too engrossed in cultural and extracurricular activities and studies took a backseat,' she explains.
Well, she is working on three promising Tamil films at the moment, but it's just that all her relatives are from Andhra Pradesh. 'So when they don't see me on TV much they assume I am not doing any films,' explains Bindu, but is game enough to admit, 'It haunts me that I am not working on a Telugu film.'
Soon her relatives would have something to cheer about as her next Telugu film, Pilla Zamindar is set to release. Bindu is playing the lead opposite Nani in the film.
'To be honest things are not happening for me in Tollywood at the moment,' she admits. She made her debut with Avakai Biriyani in 2008. It was an off-beat film and she did get good reviews for her acting. But since then her career sort of hit a downward spiral.
Considering she grew up in small towns like Vellore, Guntur, Vijayawada until she finished college, she was perhaps a little unprepared for the glitzy ways of showbiz.
However, she doesn't blame anyone else for it. 'I think it is my own making. I was too na've and did not know how to carry myself and also put on a lot of weight, and nothing much went right since my debut,' she laments.
Bindu is making sure she doesn't repeat those mistakes. 'I am a lot more conscious about the latest fashion trends and what I wear and what I say. I also lost a lot of weight to get back in shape and it has also helped me gain a lot of confidence,' she explains.
Things are looking pretty good for her in Tamil cinema too. Bindu has just finished filming for comedy thriller, Kazhugu being directed by Sathyasiva.
She is also playing the lead in an Ascar Ravichandran production, Vallinam. 'I have just signed up to play the lead in a film being produced by Khushbu. Her husband Sundar is directing the film. So I am quite happy with the way my career is shaping up in Tamil cinema,' she beams.
Ask her what is it that is working for her in Tamil, 'Honestly, I don't know,' she responds grinning. Maybe it's because of the fact that she is an outsider in Tamil cinema and by default a little more exotic.
Her performance as a prostitute in her last release Veppam, perhaps has something to do with it. 'The film has been received very well in Tamil and I have been flooded with offers since,' says Bindu.
She admits playing a prostitute wasn't very easy. 'Some of the intimate scenes were especially tough. But then since there was a woman directing the film it was a little easy,' she explains.
Her father is a commissioner at the commercial taxes department while her mother is a homemaker. Coming from a conservative Telugu family that must surely have provoked some reactions from home, we'd assume.
'My parents knew that I was playing a prostitute but have not seen the film yet. I made sure they did not see it,' she explains adding, 'But I am a tad nervous about the prospect of my relatives watching the film when it runs on TV.' Being an actress is not an easy job is it?
Her hobbies include playing badminton, watching movies and swimming. 'I love swimming. It's like the ultimate stress buster for me, I can never miss my swims,' she says signing off.
